From Creation to Planning to Execution

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
Abraham Lincoln
16th president of the United States

An axe is a strength multiplier. You can be the strongest lumberjack in the world, but with a dull axe, you are in trouble!

A strong plan is invaluable in generating outcomes that match the desired ones discovered in the initial meetings and design phases of any project, but especially in larger and more complex projects where parts of the work will be delegated to team members that will be responsible for parts of the whole.

When I was younger, and part of one of our Canadian cadet corps promoted to command of a section, I had a commanding officer that would tell us what we had to do, when it had to be done by and what things we were not allowed to do.  On each project I am engaged in I look for these guide rails.

To this end, detailed story boarding is essential in this process otherwise there is the possibility of “drift” happening in the production process which leads to re-works that cost time and money and can lengthen the projects completion time.

Bringing together all the elements of a project in a timely and efficient manner is an art that brings me joy in of itself.

See an example of my planning here.

Here I have used a combination of Google Docs for the storyboard, which allows me to easily share with others in organizations that use G-Suite emails so that comments can be communicated in a timely manner. I use Twine (see below) for the initial mapping of the paths a learner can take, and to visually display the ideal path for stakeholders to view and comment on.

From here I use either Figma or Adobe XD to visually display the format and colour decisions in a mock-up selection of slides for review and sign off prior to development of the initial segment of the project.
